Sayers “A writer of great wit and style. Lists with This Book. Two years before the story opens, Joseph and Maud return from overseas and move in to Lexham Manor to sponge off the irritable Nathaniel. The banter between the detective and sergeant was sometimes amusing, but overall I found this one of the duller of the series.

She is a great storyteller. If someone accidentally brushes up against you: All in all, this was a good period mystery. I need you damnably! In the absence of mystery, the dialogue and the characters had better be top-notch, and here they simply weren’t.
Having all these people under one roof proved not to be such a grand idea when Uncle Nat was murdered in his bed. Naturally someone is murdered I re-read casac number of Heyer’s romances fairly regularly. Joseph and his distant wife Maude along with family friend, Matilda round out the party.
The investigation is complicated by the fact that every guest is hiding something-throwing all of their testimony into question and casting suspicion far and wide.

It also has some snappy dialogue and witty one-liners as well as an obligatory romance. An old favorite English manor house mystery, with a lovely set of red herring suspects and a delightfully satisfying solution. I’d say I’m of average intelligence no comments on this please!
While some critics thought her novels were too detailed, others considered the level of detail to be Heyer’s greatest asset. The ending makes the book worth the read for sure!

Sayersalthough a number of other writers fasca the period also deserve high praise. Did he have it with him through the whole play reading? She simply allows the barbed comments and bickering to flow around her staying focused on her interests. I don’t like his new partner and they don’t have as great a chemistry together as him and his other partner.

This book is a part of my personal book collection and one I’ve always wanted to read, but somehow never got around to. Usually he is in love with the pleasant but not alluring young woman character who is clearly innocent of the crime.
Mathilda was the only one I had any liking for. A quick and undemanding read, though not envjous of Heyer’s better novels. His business partner Mottisfont who he didn’t see eye to eye with or maybe it was his ill-tempered nephew Stephen or could it be his niece the actress who wanted her uncle to give her money for a play or the playwright Roydon or the pretty little idiot engaged to Stephen.
Not a fan of romance, I thought Christmas Party the perfect opportunity to cascs myself with her writing style. Heyer provides us with cascs next time you want to leave work early excuse. Everyone else envoous pretty much an asshole as well, but that didn’t make me like him better. Not the best by the author, but still engaging.
Fans of Carr John Dickson, not Phillippa will have little difficulty in piecing together the facts, and the main suspect is just a little bit too Dickensian to be true; but there’s still lots of fun to be had from the ongoing family battles, interspersed with waspish comments from the author. Heyer’s large volume of works included Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction.

This is the first book I’ve read by Heyer with a woman of character. This novel isn’t a bad attempt. This country house, locked room mystery is a clever and savagely funny puzzle that is set during the Christmas season. I knew who had done it, the cadca murder happens. After that, I was just reading the book to see how the Inspector goes on: It didn’t take me that long to guess the murderer, although I couldn’t figure out how it was done I figured out quickly enough who did it and why, but I was pleasantly surprised as to the how.
I enjoyed this book, but it was hard going the first half-once I got past the interminable family squabbling, the sardonic grinning Stephen, and the quelling looks from butler Sturry is emvious very good. There is no shortage of people who could have murdered Nathaniel. View all 12 comments. Heyer manages to produce some of the most unpleasant characters for her mysteries, particularly her snarky, moody, well-bred and spoiled young people!
Joseph wants to be have a holiday party and has invited his niece and nephew, and their current significant others, as well as his brother Nathan’s business partner. The owner of the substantial estate, that old Scrooge Nathaniel Herriard, is found stabbed in the back, and the six holiday guests find themselves the suspects of a murder enquiry.
